{Interview with Tisha Johnson}

I am so excited about this interview today with Tisha Johnson!  This fellow Canadian has an approach to photography that is like no other.  Tisha has such artistic style with retro flair that you will never be able to choose which print you want on canvas.  Beautiful, breathtaking, and fun ~ I am absolutely in love with how she captured this little one and my Tribal Princess Tieback!  I am so proud to introduce the wonderful Tisha Johnson of Intrigue Johnson.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi All!  I am a newborn/boudoir/wedding photographer located in Southwestern Ontario Canada! I shoot all natural light and on location.  I love finding and playing with light.  I am an avid coffee drinker, I absolutely adore thunderstorms, and I hate socks/shoes (winters suck for me! lol).  I am a 34 year old woman who has two teenage boys and have been with the love of my life for almost 19 years 🙂

How did you get your start in photography?

I have always been the “girl with a camera” but it wasn’t until about 7-8 years ago when I started working at my local camera shop that my interest turned into a passion!  I spent hours and hours playing and learning all about everything! Cameras became my life!  Thanks to my family and friends who helped push me! 🙂 I still continue to learn everyday . . . in fact I am taking a boudoir workshop in February with a couple of Photographers that I truly look up to!  I am so excited about it!

Is this a full time job or a part time gig?

I am in it 100% full time! Maybe a little too full time says my hubby and kids! lol

What three words describe your style?

Fun.  Loveable.  Vintagey

How do you describe your approach to photography to your clients?

I am REAL, just me ya know!!  I am down to earth, carefree, outgoing, and I’d also like to think  I am a little funny!! 😉  I like to have FUN on a shoot and I like that my clients have fun too! I want them to go away from their experience with me with a great big giant smile on their faces while saying to themselves “that was AWESOME!” . . . that’s my goal!

Do you always know when you get that perfect shot?  Any surprises during the editing process?

Yes, absolutely! And I’m the dork that yells out at the session “THAT’S THE MONEY SHOT!!”  I’m very vocal!  If i love it I let them know by ooooooing and ahhhing and saying all kinds of crazy stuff.  And even when its not “great,” like how I pictured it in my head, I will say  “well we tried it,  it doesn’t look right lets try something else!”

What are you inspired by?

Oh man, that’s a good question! I LOVE shooting with other photographers.  That’s what seems to inspire me the most!  I love working off of each others energy! And light!  I LOVE what it does how it works and plays…I find light very inspiring!

Are you self taught?  Learn somewhere else?

I am 100% self taught BUT I am ALWAYS learning!!  I am always reading, taking courses, workshop!  You can NEVER learn enough!

Any special moments or funny bloopers you want to share with us that happened during a session?

Oh man too many to list!  I am a total clutz!  I will say one thing though: do not EVER trust someone when they tell you an electric fence is turned OFF ~ it most certainly is NOT! (And then you start hollering expletives while your poor clients look on in horror!)

Do you have any special rituals that are apart of your editing process, music you like to listen to, etc?

I would like to say yes but I am soooo easily distracted that I almost HAVE to have nothing going on around me when I am working on the computer! But if it had to be something it would be Netflix playing in the background!

Do you have a “glass” addiction?  What is your favorite lens?

I cant really afford to have that kind of addiction but I have a HUGE window shopping glass addiction!  Ha ha!  My fave lens right now is my 85mm 1.8G. I got it about 4 months ago now and love, love, love it!!  It seems to never leave my camera now!!  I am a prime gal all my lenses that I shoot with are primes.  I just love them (50mm 1.4G, 60mm 2.8G 35mm 1.8G and i have a 16-55mm 2.8)  My next lens will be the 24mm 1.4G mmmmmmm 🙂

What advice would you give a photographer just starting in this business?

Never stop dreaming!  If  you want it it can be yours with passion and hard work and knowing that you can never stop learning.  Your dreams can come true!
