{Interview with Tisha Johnson}

I am so excited about this interview today with Tisha Johnson!  This fellow Canadian has an approach to photography that is like no other.  Tisha has such artistic style with retro flair that you will never be able to choose which print you want on canvas.  Beautiful, breathtaking, and fun ~ I am absolutely in love with how she captured this little one and my Tribal Princess Tieback!  I am so proud to introduce the wonderful Tisha Johnson of Intrigue Johnson.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi All!  I am a newborn/boudoir/wedding photographer located in Southwestern Ontario Canada! I shoot all natural light and on location.  I love finding and playing with light.  I am an avid coffee drinker, I absolutely adore thunderstorms, and I hate socks/shoes (winters suck for me! lol).  I am a 34 year old woman who has two teenage boys and have been with the love of my life for almost 19 years :)

myfamily

How did you get your start in photography?

I have always been the “girl with a camera” but it wasn’t until about 7-8 years ago when I started working at my local camera shop that my interest turned into a passion!  I spent hours and hours playing and learning all about everything! Cameras became my life!  Thanks to my family and friends who helped push me! :) I still continue to learn everyday . . . in fact I am taking a boudoir workshop in February with a couple of Photographers that I truly look up to!  I am so excited about it!

tishajohnson3

Is this a full time job or a part time gig?

I am in it 100% full time! Maybe a little too full time says my hubby and kids! lol

tishajohnson10

What three words describe your style?

Fun.  Loveable.  Vintagey

tishajohnson6

How do you describe your approach to photography to your clients?

I am REAL, just me ya know!!  I am down to earth, carefree, outgoing, and I’d also like to think  I am a little funny!! ;)   I like to have FUN on a shoot and I like that my clients have fun too! I want them to go away from their experience with me with a great big giant smile on their faces while saying to themselves “that was AWESOME!” . . . that’s my goal!

tishajohnson8

Do you always know when you get that perfect shot?  Any surprises during the editing process?

Yes, absolutely! And I’m the dork that yells out at the session “THAT’S THE MONEY SHOT!!”  I’m very vocal!  If i love it I let them know by ooooooing and ahhhing and saying all kinds of crazy stuff.  And even when its not “great,” like how I pictured it in my head, I will say  ”well we tried it,  it doesn’t look right lets try something else!”

tishajohnson12

What are you inspired by?

Oh man, that’s a good question! I LOVE shooting with other photographers.  That’s what seems to inspire me the most!  I love working off of each others energy! And light!  I LOVE what it does how it works and plays…I find light very inspiring!

tishajohnson1

Are you self taught?  Learn somewhere else?

I am 100% self taught BUT I am ALWAYS learning!!  I am always reading, taking courses, workshop!  You can NEVER learn enough!

tishajohnson7

Any special moments or funny bloopers you want to share with us that happened during a session?

Oh man too many to list!  I am a total clutz!  I will say one thing though: do not EVER trust someone when they tell you an electric fence is turned OFF ~ it most certainly is NOT! (And then you start hollering expletives while your poor clients look on in horror!)

tishajohnson2

Do you have any special rituals that are apart of your editing process, music you like to listen to, etc?

I would like to say yes but I am soooo easily distracted that I almost HAVE to have nothing going on around me when I am working on the computer! But if it had to be something it would be Netflix playing in the background!

tishajohnson11

Do you have a “glass” addiction?  What is your favorite lens?

I cant really afford to have that kind of addiction but I have a HUGE window shopping glass addiction!  Ha ha!  My fave lens right now is my 85mm 1.8G. I got it about 4 months ago now and love, love, love it!!  It seems to never leave my camera now!!  I am a prime gal all my lenses that I shoot with are primes.  I just love them (50mm 1.4G, 60mm 2.8G 35mm 1.8G and i have a 16-55mm 2.8)  My next lens will be the 24mm 1.4G mmmmmmm :)

tishajohnson4
What advice would you give a photographer just starting in this business?

Never stop dreaming!  If  you want it it can be yours with passion and hard work and knowing that you can never stop learning.  Your dreams can come true!

{Feature Friday: Aubrey Adair Photography}

{Interview with Aubrey Adair}

I love the style Aubrey brings to her work!  Aubrey is based out of Medina, Ohio and strives to capture moments in a natural and artistic fashion.  And what is so special about Aubrey is that she captures the person, the real essence of who they are.  I feel really lucky to have “met” Aubrey.  Super sweet person; super talented photographer.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a wife to a wonderful and supportive husband, Nathan. I am also a mother to two sweet and rambunctious little boys, Lincoln and Milo.

AA

How did you get your start in photography?

I have always enjoyed photography.  The love has been in my family since I can remember.  My grandfather was a photojournalist and I grew up in front of my Uncle’s camera because he loved photography.  But I think it all really began when I was starting my own family.  I learned a bit of film photography just out of High School but when my husband bought me my first DSLR, I was hooked!

ad

Is this a full time job or a part time gig?

It is a balancing act! I work at photography pretty much full time.  I think that once you start photography as a business it just becomes a part of who you are.  I eat, sleep and might even breathe photography.  I am learning to balance work with my life.  My boys come first.  Lincoln who is 6 years old attends 1st grade with K12 program here at home so he and his learning is my first priority and giving Milo, who is 4, the time and attention that he needs is most important.  It is a very tough balance when photography is also part of who you are.

aa6

What three words describe your style?

Happy.  Pure.  Natural

aa3-horz

How do you describe your approach to photography to your clients?

I like to catch the pure and natural moments.  So even if they are a bit posed I like to catch that certain smile or little face that shows more of them.  With newborns you cannot go wrong, everything about them is pure and natural but I like to tell my clients that I will just “go with the flow.”  That is how I work.  Different lighting situations, different backdrops, different personalities…You have to be ready to adjust from one minute to the next as a photographer.  Not every client and situation is the same and no one photograph is the same.  I have to be able to just “go with it.”

aa

Do you always know when you get that perfect shot?  Any surprises during the editing process?

I think that you can get an idea when you get a beautiful shot.  That is one benefit of digital photography.  You can look back and see it on the camera but I am always surprised once I get my images up on the computer.  The ones that I wasn’t so sure about can be some of the most amazing!

aa2

What are you inspired by?

Everything inspires me…love, light, location, babies…everything…everyone..there is always a story to be told!

aa0

Are you self taught?  Learn somewhere else?

Mostly self taught.

aa11

Any special moments or funny bloopers you want to share with us that happened during a session?

I have special moments at every session.  I feel that I have a connection with all of my clients.  As for bloopers, I have one of those every session as well.  We are always laughing.  I hope that my clients have fun in the time they spend with me!

aa18

Do you have any special rituals that are apart of your editing process, music you like to listen to, etc?

I love music when I edit.  I put on Pandora and choose something to listen to that fits my mood.  It helps me flow through editing.

aa15

Do you have a “glass” addiction?  What is your favorite lens?

I LOVE my 50mm 1.4 and my 100mm macro but am looking forward to a 35mm 1.2 in the near future!

{Feature Friday: Justine Miller Photography}

{Interview with Justine Miller}

Wow!  What can I say?  Only that Justine Miller is an amazing photographer and can capture any moment fabulously.  Justine works out of Mesa, Arizona and specializes in Maternity, Newborn, Family, and Wedding Photography.  She has a unique style which is a beautiful blend of journalistic, contemporary, and traditional which makes for a very special image.  I was in love as soon as I saw some of my work featured on a tiny newborn and I know that you will be too!  Now, a little more about Justine!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a wife and mother to three children: Mason, Ashlynn and Ryleigh.  I happen to also be a photographer :-)

How did you get your start in photography?

My father was a hobbyist.  I remember growing up he would set up sheets in the front room and set up his camera and tripod and attempt to get family photos of us.  Once I had my own children I began to really enjoy and value photography.

Is this a full time job or a part time gig?

I am 100% full-time.   No backup gig for me.

What three words describe your style?

Classic.  Clean.  True.

How do you describe your approach to photography to your clients?

I always say a perfect photo is not comprised of four faces smiling and looking at the camera.  It is about capturing the essence of their souls.  I try to be natural.

Do you always know when you get that perfect shot?  Any surprises during the editing process?

No, not really.  I just kind of go into this other place when I am shooting.  My photographer-self takes over and I am almost watching myself shoot.  It is kind of like an outer-body experience.  I somehow always know that I got the shot they will love and am not really surprised too often.  Of course there are always the photos that make my heart melt when I am editing.  And I know I did a good job when I can’t wipe the smile off my own face when I am editing the clients photos!

What are you inspired by?

Everything: life, children, smiles, tears, sunsets, trees, the smell of a baby. . . there is so much in the world to find inspiration from.  It is hard to narrow it down.

Are you self taught?  Learn somewhere else?

Primarily self taught.

Any special moments or funny bloopers you want to share with us that happened during a session?

I have backed into a cactus before and had to have my second shooter pull thorns from my rear!

Do you have any special rituals that are apart of your editing process, music you like to listen to, etc?

Not really. . . I just have to be in the mood to do it.  If I’m not, I just can’t edit.

Do you have a “glass” addiction?  What is your favorite lens?

Um, I have a hoarding problem.  Nikon loves me – I own every lens created I think!  My fav is my 35 1.2 mm right now, but I also love my 70-200 2.8.

Feature Friday: Autumn Moore Photography

{Interview with Autumn Moore}

Working within the cyber world is really a unique experience.  I have met so many wonderful people; Autumn Moore is one of them.  Based out of Newcastle, Oklahoma – Autumn strives to capture the inner joy and bliss of each and every child she photographs.  She also approaches every client (or vendor) as a friend and really connects with people are a caring level.  I am so thrilled this week to have the opportunity to work with Autumn and share a little more about her!  Got your coffee?

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a wife, mommy of two beautiful little girls, and oldest sibling out of four girls.  Children have always been my passion!  I went to school for early Childhood Education and even owned a preschool for several years.  I have also always enjoyed being creative.  Refurbishing furniture, renovating houses, decorating my home, sewing (well trying to sew HAHA!) painting murals on my daughters walls…lets just say that HGTV is my best friend!  Photography definitely combines my love for children and creative side into such a perfect career for me!

How did you get your start in photography?

I have always been “the one with the camera.”  So much so, that I am pretty sure that I have annoyed some people in my family!  2 ½ years ago my husband surprised me on my birthday with my first SLR Canon camera…the rest is history!

Is this a full time job or a part time gig?

Definitely beyond full time! Haha!

What three words describe your style?

Fun ~ I think you can see that these kiddos are just having a good time in most of my images.  That is so important to me because those expressions are the ones that their parents probably love to see the most throughout a normal day at home!

Creative ~ I am constantly trying to mix up fabrics that may not look like they go together but something about them together just works…or come up with a cute idea for a session based on info supplied by the parent!  I try to customize something in every shoot!

Simplistic ~ While I do incorporate fun sets, props and some color into my sessions, I really do like to try to focus on the child or baby without all of that “stuff” distracting from them.  While fun and bright is pretty, I myself love to hang the images on my wall that are really focused on my children, not the props in the picture with my children.  While my mini sessions are fun and bright (because that’s when I let my creative side really take over) all of my regular sessions (children, family, newborn, etc.) do have quite a few more simplistic shots that are really just focused on the main subject!

How do you describe your approach to photography to your clients?

For children’s sessions, I always tell the parents to please just let their children know that they are coming to play.  I never like for parents to pressure their children to sit down and say cheese; it is meant to be a fun experience!  I really like to just play, sing songs, tell jokes and have a good time with them.  I think real interaction gets you real genuine expressions!

Do you always know when you get that perfect shot?  Any surprises during the editing process?

Yes, I definitely fall in love with images in camera, before I ever even get them onto my computer!  I think the best surprises are when you fall in love with an image that you didn’t think was too special in camera!

What are you inspired by?

Oh my goodness!  That’s a hard question…I think just about anything and everything!  Clothing, children’s books, magazines, home décor, patterns…I have found inspiration in so many different places!

Are you self taught?  Learn somewhere else?

I am pretty much self taught, however, after a year of owning my camera and shooting in AV mode I did take 2 classes (both a duration of 1 month with 1 class per week) to learn how to shoot in manual mode.  Definitely one of the best decisions that I ever made for my photography career!

Any special moments or funny bloopers you want to share with us that happened during a session?

Well, I do work mostly with children and babies so there are a ton of “moments” for sure!  I would say one of my most memorable though was during one of my first newborn shoots.  I had the baby posed naked, bottom up. She ended up going number 2 and it seriously came out in the shape of a rainbow…for like 30 seconds or so, it seemed…her mom and I were just cracking up over it!!!

cas8

I think some of my most special moments are when you have those children who just would never take a good picture for anyone else and they really respond to YOU.  That’s such a wonderful feeling!  Even better when mom starts crying and thanking you when she sees the final images…those are definitely the moments that make what I do SO worth every bit of my time that I put into it!

Do you have any special rituals that are apart of your editing process, music you like to listen to, etc?

Not really…I do edit almost every night though so I guess my ritual would be getting my 2 girls to bed! I guess I am kind of boring.  Haha!

Do you have a “glass” addiction?  What is your favorite lens?

You know, I probably don’t have near as many lenses as some but the lenses I do have, I enjoy! My “go to” lens is my Canon 50mm 1.4. I often use that when shooting children and always with newborns!  For families, I typically use my Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I also have a macro lens that I just recently purchased…I have only “played” with it once though, so we shall see….

What advice would you give photographers who are just starting in this business?

I think the biggest thing is to NEVER compare yourself to other photographers!  Focus on YOU.  Your own work.  The people you are comparing yourself to have probably been doing it much longer than you too!  It is such a difficult thing to do but, when you stop focusing on what others are doing, that’s when you will really start to grow as a photographer.

I also recommend that you do your homework.  There are some great tips and advice out there that can really help you find things that work to get children to interact, or keep the baby asleep or make that couple feel comfortable in front of your lens.  Doing your homework, I feel is most important, when attempting poses with newborns or small children.  If a pose looks dangerous, it probably is!  Most photographers use photoshop to do composites; they make that baby appear that he was sleeping alone on the guitar or bookshelf but he obviously never was…that’s way too dangerous and never worth the risk just for an image!
